When the Broadway production of the explicit rock musical Spring Awakening first came to town in December 2009, the folks at Denver Center Attractions were a little worried. Although spokeswoman Genevieve Miller says the play “deals with the issues in a really thoughtful way,” the organization didn’t want to risk catching audience members off guard with the frank presentation of teenagers discovering their sexuality.

Two years later, Spring Awakening returns to Denver in triumphant fashion, having become one of the best-known contemporary plays. “We’re not as concerned this time around about warning people,” says Miller. The cast has turned over entirely in the interim, and this tour features Denver School of the Arts graduate Jamie Rea Billings.

?The traveling show had only two days available to spend in Denver. Ordinarily, that would be too little time, but the show was so successful the last time it was in town that DCA was happy to accommodate the tight schedule this year.

Performances are at 8 p.m. today and tomorrow at the Buell Theatre, in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; tickets range from $20 to $80. For more information, visit www.denvercenter.org.
