Started in 2004 as an open-mic night, Cafe Cultura is now a full-fledged nonprofit, and the Art in the Park monthly summer series is just one of many events the youth-oriented organization puts on each year. Tonight’s installment includes an open mic for the community, along with performances from national slam poet champs Slam Nuba and metal band NDAAZ.

“We wanted to use it as a space for people to express themselves, whether it’s through spoken word, music or visual arts,” says Cafe Cultura director and co-founder Ara Cruz. “We just wanted to make a space for people to come together and build community.” The series also serves to highlight fellow community organizations; this evening, the Gang Rescue and Support Project (GRASP) will speak about its own outreach program.

Cafe Cultura’s August edition of Art in the Park opens tonight at 6:30 at the amphitheater at Lincoln/La Alma Park, 12th Avenue and Osage Street; performances begin at 7 p.m., and there will be food available beforehand, along with a vendor marketplace. There is a $3 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away. For more information, visit cafecultura.org.
