I went to Ireland last fall with realistic expectations: good music, strong whiskey, great beer and green landscapes. What I didn’t expect was much in the way of food. But I was pleasantly surprised to find the grub wasn’t just the atrocious smoked butt and cabbage with boiled potatoes that my mom made me eat every St. Paddy’s day growing up. Instead, I loaded up on delicious curries and bangers and mash, and tasted many a mouth-watering fish and chip.

Tonight, Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret invites you to come taste for yourself what Ireland has to offer, at A Night in Ireland. Wines will be paired with hors d’oeuvre including traditional boxty with smoked salmon, curried pastries, corned beef sliders and Guinness-braised lamb shepherd’s pie. “I think people are going to be really surprised by the fun, gourmet food we’ve come up with based on pretty traditional Irish fare,” says Jefferson Arca of Lannie’s. “People don’t think of Ireland as gourmet food and wine, but this caterer has been creative and kind of whimsical.”

Following the food, famed local Irish folk band Potcheen will take the stage, and a whiskey tasting will pit Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey against the better-known Irish brands. The dinner costs $45 and starts at 6 p.m. at 1601 Arapahoe Street. For tickets, go to www.lannies.com or call 303-293-0075. Ireland is just the latest stop on Lannie’s monthly round-the-world tour; Latin America is next.
