Today, Little Man Ice Cream invites hoopers to show their stuff in its third annual Hula Hoop Contest, a competition to find Denver’s most athletic and unique hula artists. And while endurance is an important factor in this high-stakes competition (winners vie for tickets to Water World, among other attractions), judges will reward originality over duration.
“A good hooper is someone who thinks outside the box, someone who gets creative and uses their imagination,” says Little Man’s Loren Martinez. “There’s more to hooping than just the hips.”
Participants must check in at Little Man, 2620 16th Street, starting at 1 p.m., though the actual hooping takes place across the street at Hirshorn Park at 2:30 p.m. There's a $15 entry fee ($20 on the day of the event); all proceeds support urban agriculture programs at the GrowHaus.
