Artist and local arts champion Tracy Weil loves Halloween and painting and the circle of life, and in his new show, Los Esqueletos (The Skeletons), he ties all three together with a theme that straddles the spooky season with a nod to the Day of the Dead.

Initially inspired by a Spanish-language children’s counting song of the same name (sung to the tune of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”), Weil put his love of the season down on canvas in skeletal swatches of black and white, dotted with patches of color, to convey a dark yet joyful place where life and death do a whimsical tango. “It’s like jumping into a different world,” he says. “I love creating a whole world with its own iconography.”

Along with twelve large paintings, Weil will include a series of ceramic skulls and an altar to honor the dead; the exhibit debuts tonight at Ironton Studios and Gallery, 3636 Chestnut Place in RiNo, with a reception from 6 to 10 p.m., and continues through November 30. (A second reception will occur at the same time on November 1 as part of First Friday and Denver Arts Week.) For details, visit ironton-studios.com.
