In the Starz FilmCenter's "Language of Film" series, which starts on Tuesday, October 7, Denver filmmaker Alexandre Philippe will examine three great films from a storyteller's point of view, deconstructing narrative to reveal what he calls the movies' "hidden anatomy." Certainly, he will have superb material to work with. On Tuesday, Philippe's subject will be Rebecca (1940), Alfred Hitchcock's sumptuous, Oscar-winning adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier novel about a naive girl who marries a brooding British nobleman who remains obsessed with his dead first wife. The performances by Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine are superb, but the peerless character actress Judith Anderson may be even better as the envious housekeeper. On November 11, Philippe will apply his deconstructionist tools to the greatest American movie of them all, Orson Welles's Citizen Kane (1941), and on December 9 he'll tackle Woman in the Dunes (1964), Hiroshi Teshagahara's haunting allegory of control and entrapment involving a scientist and a mysterious woman living at the bottom of a sandpit.
