City Donuts

Five-dollar doughnuts with too-clever names are around every corner these days, and there's usually a line around that corner, too. But sometimes you just want the classics: When you're with your kid on a Sunday morning or picking up a few dozen to take to work, less is more. When that mood strikes, skip the line and head to City Donuts. This East Colfax outpost opened in fall 2015, hawking doughnuts that will take you back to your childhood, with scores of cake, raised and so-called fancy offerings (think bear claws and jelly doughnuts); the classic glazed version is so shiny, it's positively lacquered. If you're the kind of philistine who doesn't want to have your cake (and eat it, too) for breakfast, City Donuts also offers breakfast sandwiches. The local bakery also has outposts in Aurora and Littleton.
