Alex B.'s Pirates of the Caribean remix: Top five other recent local remixes

Alex Botwin of Pnuma Trio, Paper Diamond and the head of Elm & Oak Records, recently dropped a little tune for the Pirates of the Caribbean score that made it onto the official soundtrack for the movie. Now Alex B. will forever be printed next to Hans Zimmer and Rodriogo y Gabriela with his remixed masterpiece. To commemorate this awesome achievement in Colorado's growing electronic scene, we've compiled a list of some of the more recent remixes that are coming out of our great state.

5. Savoy's remix of Yolanda Be Cool's "We No Speak Americano." Savoy recently introduced a new festival in Boulder titled "Glow Fest" along with Crystal Castles. This remix of "We No Speak Americano" is glitchier than a lot of other versions, as this is a very popular track to sample.

4. Robotic Pirate Monkey's remix of Dolly Parton's "Jolene." Boulder based Robotic Pirate Monkey (or Robo-Pi-Mo as mentioned outside of their shows) has been remixing dubstep in the scene for just a short period, but with this bass mashup, the group's name spread quickly. Comprised of Matt Flesher, Matt Berryhill and Andrew Hathaway (Hathbanger), RPM is now dropping nuggets of noise on a tour of the West Coast.

3. Project Aspect's remix of Chromeo's "Night by Night." Here's a little sample of our featured headliner at the Westword Music Showcase's number one hit, as reconstructed by ProJect Aspect. Aspect dropped this jam hard when he opened for EOTO on New Year's Eve at City Hall, and has since been slaying his way through original beats and old Whitney Houston cuts.

2. Pretty Lights remix of the Allman Brother's "Midnight Rider" and using Eric Clapton's version of "After Midnight." Derek Vincent Smith is not a DJ; he's a producer. There is a huge difference. He doesn't simply flip records; he utilizes live sampling and the Ableton Live program to create upbeat jams from slow, rock classics. "After Midnight" and "Midnight Rider" are two highly recognizable songs in their own right, but Smith adds his personal flair and panache to the track, which simultaneously invokes nostalgia and originality.

1. Big Gigantic's remix of Aloe Blacc's "I need a dolla." Aloe Blacc gave Denver one the most soulful performances at City Hall last year, and this song had people tossin' dollar bills on stage. When Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken dropped it at the Fox Theatre, the bills went flyin' again. Big Gigantic has also remixed Wiz Khalifa and Chiddy Bang, among other artists, but this one still stands out by focusing on both Big G's sound and Aloe Blacc's soul.
