As Reverend Dead Eye, Brent Burkhart is a bit of an itinerant spirit these days, seeing as how he's almost always on tour somewhere. But between tours, he's made time for his first full band since making dark post-punk with the Bedraggled. Joining Burkhart in Broken Spirits (due at Old Curtis Street on Friday, July 16) is former Tarmints guitarist Bobby Jamison and former American Relay drummer Alex Hebert. Musically, think Thee Headcoats or even Holly Golightly: not rockabilly, not blues, not punk, but an amalgam of all three with an undergirding of gospel. Earthy but spooky, sublime yet profane, exposing inner demons with a nearly reckless abandon, Broken Spirits is the honky-tonk band you want to see but often don't. The group's recently released Ghostrock Spirituals EP is full of juke-joint anthems of the highest caliber.
