FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7
After a killer set at this year's Westword Music Showcase, Chromeo brings its electro-funk to the Ogden. The duo usually brings a party that will get your hips shakin', so bring your dancing shoes. Mayer Hawthorne & The County and Sammy Bananas open the 16+ show that starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $35.
There is a long tradition of ex-punk rockers trading in their power chords and electric guitars for the idyllic green pastures of folk music. Frank Turner of Winchester, England, made that very leap in 2005 after the breakup of his progressive hardcore band Million Dead had reached its zenith, and he hasn't looked back since. The all ages show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15.
The Chicago-born MC Lupe Fiasco returns to the Mile High City in support of his latest effort, LASERS (an acronym for "Love Always Shines Everytime: Remember to Smile"), with Tinie Tempah and Sara Green opening the show. Show starts at 8 p.m. at tickets are $34.50 and $40 day of show.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8
Blasting out of late-'70s Los Angeles like the most righteous Santa Ana wind ever, X blew the smog-and-pot-addled minds of hippies and metalheads alike. The fierce foursome's post-Raymond Chandler, pre-James Ellroy snapshots of L.A. despair and absurdity allowed landlocked daydreamers everywhere to figuratively stand at the corner of Hollywood and Vine. The all ages show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $29.50.
Headed up by former Circle Jerks/Black Flag frontman Keith Morris, the LA-based hardcore band OFF! packs nearly as much as Morris' previous bands. The group also features Burning Brides' Dimitri Coates, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald and Rocket from the Crypt's drummer Mario Rubalcaba. The all ages show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15.
St. Vincent at the Boulder Theater
On tour in support of her latest effort, Strange Mercy, St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) brings one of the sweetest voices in indie pop today to the Boulder Theatre for an all ages show. It starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $23 in advance and $25 at the door.
Though renowned among fans of bizarro punk rock in the West, Melt Banana is still somewhat unknown in its home of Tokyo, where J-pop still reigns supreme. Tjutjuna, Action Friend and Echo Beds open the 21+ show, which starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9
Odd Future at the Ogden Theatre
Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All is a group of hard core hip-hop hooligans who came to pillage, plunder and cause chaos with their rhymes. Led by the enigmatic Tyler, the Creator, the entire crew -- Hodgy Beats, Domo Genisis, Frank Ocean and Earl Sweatshirt (whose whereabouts are unknown at this time) -- made a heavy splash, both in the industry and with fans. The 16+ show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $27.75 in advance and $28 at the door.
The Airborne Toxic Event at the Fillmore
While the music of the Airborne Toxic Event might be derivative and calculating, the band will still most like appeal to music fans who grew up on the Cure and Smashing Pumpkins as those who cut their teeth on Arcade Fire and Interpol. The Drowning Men and Epilogues open the16+ show that starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $22.50.
