Just received word of a cool new initiative to empower girls and get them involved with music called Girls Rock Denver. It's a non-profit volunteer group running a summer camp to teach girls an instrument, help them form bands and write songs and play a show at the Mercury Cafe. As a father of a daughter with musical inclinations, I can tell you first hand what an absolutely cool thing this is.

The group is having a benefit concert on June 27 at the hi-dive featuring Harpoontang (members of Paper Bird with Laura Goldhamer), Andrea Ball and B.Sous. In the meantime, they are looking for donations of musical gear of any sort, from guitars to cables, drum kits, microphones, amps and pedals. If you have some old gear lying around unused (and face it, who doesn't?) you couldn't pick a better way to get rid of it. Donations are being accepted at Music Gear Guys music store at 220 South Broadway (you can call them at 720-570-7956) and you can get any other info you might need from the Girls Rock Denver website.
