Tom Waits played a extraordinary show in Phoenix at the Orpheum Theatre this past Wednesday night as part of his twelve-city "Glitter and Doom" tour. As far as we're concerned, Waits is a god among men. The guy doesn’t tour a lot and his shows have taken on the holy grail of concert experiences. Since he didn't stop in Denver on this jaunt (the last time he came through was in 1999), and there's still no word on whether he will -- this trek started in Phoenix and winds its way through the South before ending in Atlanta in July -- we took a road trip for the second night of the tour, in which Waits delivered an insanely great show. On the opening night of his two-night stand in Phoenix, Waits performed a good chunk of Mule Variations. Wednesday night's set was comprised of songs from Real Gone, including a stirring rendition of “Day After Tomorrow” and the rousing “Hoist That Rag.” Before playing piano on “A Little Rain” and “Innocent When You Dream,” Waits joked about how he bought the last dying breath of Henry Ford on eBay, and it was stored in a corked Coke bottle that he kept in the garage next to his Ford.
