The tour became a little more diverse and compelling each year until 2005, when it stopped being a tour and set up shop in Chicago at Grant Park and became a destination festival. Lollapalooza has since hosted an array of acts from Lady Gaga and Kanye West to Radiohead and Depeche Mode to the Killers and MGMT to Arcade Fire and Mumford and Sons.
This year's edition of Lollapalooza, slated to take place August 5-7, is being headlined by Eminem, the Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse, and has a pretty healthy undercard that includes Deadmau5, Deftones, Bright Eyes, the Cars, Lykke Li, Local Natives, Crystal Castles, Sleigh Bells and Best Coast, along with a few locals -- the Chain Gang of 1974 and Tennis, among a host of others. Deeply discounted advance tickets have already sold out, but three-day passes are still available for $215, if you're so inclined.
