In some ways, acts that attempt to make a first-rate recording in a mainstream style take on a more challenging task than artists who leap into the creative unknown. After all, listeners have probably heard plenty of similar stuff in the past and will be that much harder to impress. So credit Louisville-based Newcomers Home with a coup. The band's self-titled disc features sturdy songs, polished production and performances that glow like a sunrise on a spring morning.

First among equals is Katie Herzig, a vocalist with a warm tone and an allergy to oversinging, but she's ably abetted by violinist Laurie Momary and pickers Tim Thornton and Andrew Jed on compositions like the charming "Anywhere but Here" and the plaintive "In Your Face Again." Together, the players, who will headline CD-release parties on Saturday, April 30, at the Bluebird Theater, and Sunday, May 1, at Boulder's Fox Theatre, create a sound that feels like Home.
