Although Kings of Leon practically re-institutionalized Southern rock as an aesthetic, Alberta Cross (playing tonight at the Larimer Lounge with Boys) has taken it all to the next level, both visually and sonically. The NYC-by-way-of-London quintet effectively creates its own dirty, melancholic white-man blues. Guitarist Petter Ericson Stakee's voice bears the heavy influence of Neil Young, but he stakes out Alberta Cross's individuality with his much prettier sometime-falsetto.

For the handful of years since its inception, the band has made some serious headway, touring on the strength of two heavy EPs and its 2009 full-length debut, Broken Side of Time. Recently uprooting from the East Coast and moving to Los Angeles, Alberta Cross is currently at work on a follow-up record, due out later this year. This show is 21 and up, and tickets are $13-$15. Doors open at 8 p.m., and bands start at 9:30.
