It's probably no surprise that a Christian metalcore band hails from Tampa, Florida. Sure, a quick and superficial listen to the band's songs will prompt eye rolls from anyone who hates "screamo" and its offshoots. But at least these guys seem to care about being taken seriously outside the context of being a "Christian" rock band, and their lyrics aren't filled with scripture and spiritual platitudes. Influenced by the likes of Refused and At the Drive-In, as well as the better emo of the mid- to late '90s, Underoath's music is aggressive and melodic, and the band experiments with its sounds much more than most of its peers. While not for everyone, Underoath is a cut above most of the bands embracing the genre designation most often assigned to it.
