Original post, 11:50 a.m. December 10: Today is Colorado Gives Day, a 24-hour online giving initiative now in its fourth year. More than 1,400 nonprofits are participating this year -- and thanks to the Community First Foundation, which founded the event, and its main sponsor, FirstBank, 100 percent of all donations made through ColoradoGives.org today will go toward the nonprofits themselves. In addition, the participating organizations will have a shot at winning $100,000 in cash prizes.
Will Coloradans give more than last year?
In 2012, Colorado Gives Day raised a total of $15.7 million for 1,246 nonprofits thanks to more than 69,000 donations. The year before, in 2011, the online charity blitz was extended to 36 hours due to technical difficulties with the website. In that time, more than 52,000 donations totaling $12.4 million were made to 932 nonprofits. And the initiative has grown in leaps and bounds from its first year, in 2010, when 18,700 donations resulted in $8.7 million for 536 nonprofits.
