Denise Fransua died of a gunshot wound to the chest from Steven Romero, who then fatally shot himself in the head.
Fransua, 44, was an addiction counselor in Parker -- and as reported by the Denver Post, her relationship with Romero, also 44, was spotty. Though never married, the couple lived together from 2006 until last year, at which point Fransua took out a restraining order against Romero.
As for Romero, he was charged with a variety of crimes, ranging from vehicle theft to public drunkenness, between 1987 and 1990 -- but apparently nothing additional until the horrific events earlier this week.

And unfortunately, it kicked off with what appears to be a murder-suicide at a Highlands area home near the intersection of 38th and Bryant.
Thus far, Denver Police are releasing little information about the man and woman found dead at the home around 5:30 p.m. yesterday, including their relationship to each other, beyond noting that one of them lived there and the other didn't. The coroner's office is currently determining the cause of death.
