The frenzy to learn who will succeed John Fox as the next head coach of your Denver Broncos is getting crazier with each passing minute. As evidence, consider that yesterday afternoon, an SBNation post declared that prime hopeful Gary Kubiak -- who's gone from serving as John Elway's backup QB to NFL coaching gigs in Houston and Baltimore -- had been hired. But that proved to be a literal error, as you can see by the images below.

Yesterday afternoon at about 3:20 p.m., the main Yahoo page looked like so:

See the Kubiak item? Here's a closer look: A Broncos fan at Westword spotted the item and eagerly clicked. But instead of getting breaking news about Kubiak coming home again, he was confronted with this: Of course, Kubiak could eventually land this job, but it's far from a done deal. Among the others thought to be on the Broncos' radar is Seattle Seahawks defense coordinator Dan Quinn -- a mighty good idea given that the Denver D still hasn't quite risen to the level of its talent. Reports suggest Quinn's most interested in the Atlanta Falcons' head coaching opening, but he might change his mind if given the keys to the Broncos. However, he can't be interviewed while the Seahawks remain in the playoffs, and if the squad beats Green Bay this weekend, he's off-limits until after the Super Bowl.

In the meantime, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin -- another worthy candidate -- is actually scheduled to be in Denver Friday for an interview.

And there's another factor. This morning on his nationally syndicated NBC Sports radio program, Erik Kuselias argued that Peyton Manning isn't a big Kubiak fan; Kuselias suggested that Manning passed up the opportunity to play in Houston before signing with Denver in part because of his antipathy for the man who headed the Texans at the time. As such, Kuselias believes Manning might choose to sign with another team (if he decides against retiring, that is) rather than play for Kubiak.

Whatever the case, one thing's clear: Kubiak isn't the Broncos' head coach at this writing, no matter what SBNation (briefly) said.
