DEMOLITION OF GREENHOUSES AT DENVER BOTANIC GARDENSCrews destroy decades-old greenhouse
To prepare for the upcoming construction of the Gardens' new, $16 million Greenhouse Complex, demolition crews are ripping down the 10 greenhouses at the Gardens' York Street location. These structures are more than 40 years old.
The goal is to safely bring down and remove these greenhouses in one month; begin construction on the new, 15,000-square-foot Greenhouse Complex; and complete the entire project by the end of 2010. Some parts of the old greenhouses are being recycled.
Members of the Gardens' horticultural staff have relocated thousands of delicate flowers and plants to the greenhouses at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield -- 20 miles away. Many plant collections will return to the downtown property once construction is completed on the Greenhouse Complex.
