Euflora opened its first location on the 16th Street Mall, which made it a hot spot for tourists, but not local potheads, who complained about the hot prices. Euflora now has two stores open in Aurora, and both see a steady stream of traffic. Curious to see if these suburban spots were doing anything different to attract the Colorado crowds, I visited the branch at Southlands, in a former bank at 6260 South Gun Club Road.

Instead of waiting for an open budtender, customers at Euflora roam the store and scan potential purchases on an iPhone until they’re ready to pick up their goodies behind the counter. This Apple Store approach cuts out the waiting room and gives customers more opportunity for impulse buys. The capitalistic win-win allowed me to examine all of Euflora’s strains and merchandise thoroughly, and the glowing buds of Purple Pre-’98 Bubba Kush, a strain I’d never seen before, definitely stood out. Hoping it would resemble what was on display, I bought a pre-packaged gram for $18 after tax.

A cross between beloved indicas Purple Kush and Pre-’98 Bubba Kush, the plum nugs at Euflora were fierce and blasted with sugary trichomes. Most of my purchase resembled the purple shock tarts shown at the store, but the smell wasn’t even close. The tart blend of citrus and mud that originally drew me in had been replaced with a lackluster trace of spicy haze, dominated by the dreadful grassy scent associated with uncured herb.

The harsh, bland taste from a Sunday bowl didn’t impress, but breaking the pot up for a joint before Game of Thrones released some of the sweet grape aromas that make Purple Pre-’98’s parent strains so popular. The joint wasn’t quite as harsh as the pipe, and Bubba’s coffee aftertaste made a welcome appearance — but the lack of couch-lock on my HBO Sunday was a disappointment no kush-lover should have to bear. For a strain with Purple and Bubba Kush genetics to leave me awake is like Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen having an unattractive child: It’s just not supposed to happen.

Euflora’s Purple Pre-’98 Bubba Kush gave me a decent buzz that was free of paranoia, but it looked like a nine and smoked like a four. Still, the chain must be doing something right to bring in all those customers.
