Westword is covering the trial of Willie Clark, accused of murdering Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams early on New Year's Day 2007.
Testimony in the case has ended, and the jury is currently deliberating. But earlier this week, a witness mentioned the subject of a previous Westword article: Michael Andre, a flashy and gregarious Denver attorney best known for representing people involved in the high-end escort industry.
The March 2007 feature's title, "Andre the Giant," was appropriate, since writer Jared Jacang Maher's subject was a man larger than life even in death.
At Clark's trial, the aforementioned witness testified that on January 1, hours after Williams was killed, a "panicky" Clark asked the witness to put him in touch with Andre.
According to the witness, Clark called him and said, "I did some fucked up shit last night. I need to get a hold of your bro," meaning Andre. The witness said his ex-wife's niece was married to Andre and that he considered him to be like a brother. So the witness drove Clark to Andre's house.
On the way there, the witness said Clark told him, "We dumped on those fools last night." The witness wasn't privy to Clark and Andre's conversation. Afterward, the witness said he drove Clark home.
About a month and a half later, the thirty-eight-year-old Andre would be dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Andre apparently killed himself after an eight-hour standoff with police SWAT units at his Cherry Creek townhome -- taking his conversation with Clark with him to the grave.
