Powder Is Plentiful at Colorado Ski Resorts — Pot, Not So Much

So you’re going to the mountains tomorrow, your weed jar is dry as a bone, and it's nearing 7 p.m. – dispensary closing time in Denver. No worries: You can just replenish your stash tomorrow at a dispensary in the mountains, right? Not always. While many popular snowy destinations in Colorado have embraced recreational marijuana – as well as the salivating tourists who are willing to pay whatever it takes to get high legally – some ski towns aren’t so ganja-friendly.

For planning purposes, we've compiled a handy list of which mountain towns sell medical and recreational marijuana, and which ones have banned it altogether. Remember, towns and counties both have the right to ban or allow sales, and sometimes their policies conflict. Find up-to-date dispensary listings in this issue of the Chronicle and at westword.com/marijuana. In the meantime, here's the basic information:


Mountain Towns Allowing Recreational Sales: Alma, Aspen, Basalt, Breckenridge, Carbondale, Crested Butte, Dillon, Durango, Eagle, Fraser, Frisco, Georgetown, Glenwood Springs, Gunnison, Leadville, Mancos, Ridgway, Silver Plume, Silverton, Steamboat Springs and Telluride.

Mountain Towns Banning Recreational Sales: Avon*, Craig, Mountain Village, Snowmass Village, Vail* and Winter Park.

Mountain Towns Allowing Medical but Not Recreational Sales: Buena Vista and Craig.

*Although retail and medical sales are banned in Avon and Vail, dispensaries located just outside those cities in unincorporated Eagle County list themselves as Avon and Vail dispensaries. Which means you won't have to go far to get your stash...of powder or pot.
