Republicans are courting Dick Wadhams to return to Colorado and run the state party. The political operative's got the time. While in the past Wadhams has taken jobs with the candidates he's helped propel into office (Governor Bill Owens, Senator Wayne Allard), no such opportunities will arise from his latest campaign: George Allen (above) went down in macaca flames in Virginia.

That loss was nothing compared to the drubbing that Colorado Republicans took in November, though, and the savvy, eminently quotable Wadhams could represent the very life of the party.

He's reportedly mulling things over (and was seen mulling at Elway's last Friday). He may be waiting for word on the one thing that would make the top GOP job in Colorado irresistable: the choice of Denver for the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

Ken Salazar puts Denver's chances at 50-50, although the Hillary factor still argues in favor of the West (as predicted here). And if Denver gets the nod, we're putting the odds of Wadhams taking the Colorado Republican Party job at 100 percent. -- Patricia Calhoun
