The National Edward R. Murrow Awards, doled out annually by the Radio-Television News Directors Association, are among the most prestigious in electronic journalism, and as a result, most of them tend to go to stories that tackle overtly important topics: national disasters, murder investigations and the like. So it's something of a surprise that 2009's biggest local winner, KOA's April Zesbaugh, was recognized for a report about, of all things, swingers. Even those judging the piece seemed surprised to like it as much as they did. "Who knew?," they write, adding, "Reporter provides a comprehensive examination of the highly controversial subject from multiple points of view -- and brings the story back to the couple who was willing to share. The story moves quickly and engages the listener."
