Update: Kijana Jelks ID'd as Man Behind Assaults on Two Women Near Wash Park

Update: Yesterday morning, we reported about two assaults near Washington Park prior to the bust of a man for a separate incident who was being eyed as a suspect in the earlier crimes; see our previous coverage below. Now, the Denver Police Department has identified the arrestee as Kijana Jelks, eighteen, and while formal charges have not yet been handed down, investigators have positively linked him to the attacks on a pair of area women. At about 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, as we've reported, Denver police were dispatched to the area of Bayaud and Emerson on the report of an assault on a woman -- and a short time later, a similar incident took place on the 200 block of South Pearl.

Then, around 7:30 p.m., a man later ID'd as Jelks was said to have been spotted breaking into a nearby car. Following a foot chase, he was taken into custody, with police hinting that he was being investigated for possible involvement in the pair of attacks.

That afternoon, the DPD tweeted out an update, albeit featuring a misspelled version of Jelks's first name:

UPDATE: #DPD has confirmed that 18YO Lazahn Jelks, arrested last night at Speer & Pennsylvania, is also suspected of #WashParkAssaults.

Afterward, reports accessed by 7News filled in the gaps about the assaults -- both women described an attacker who fit Jelks's description -- and his subsequent arrest.

Police say Jelks was spotted slouching inside a vehicle, apparently removing a car stereo from the dash. As additional cops moved in, Jelks allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and shoved a female officer, causing her to twist her ankle. He then fled along the Cherry Creek bike path, crossing the creek itself numerous times in an attempt to throw off his pursuers. But he was later found hiding behind a bush.

Once he was safely in custody, one of the assault victims, referred to by 7News only as Ashley, was brought to the scene. She said Jelks was the person who'd raced up and put her in a chokehold she barely managed to escape.

Jelks, for his part, was apparently less than cooperative as he was taken to jail, slipping his cuffed hands from his back to his front and then making it tough on the cops tasked with recuffing him. Once at the detention center, he also reportedly refused to trade his hoodie and jeans for a jail jumpsuit.

In the end, officers had to forcibly remove his clothes.

Original post, 5:16 a.m. November 3: Last night, as authorities in Fort Collins continue to search for a man thought to be responsible for assaulting eight women in that community, two females were attacked in the area of Washington Park. But while a suspect was subsequently taken into custody, he was cuffed for a different offense, and Denver police have not yet formally linked him to the previous two crimes. Here's the latest. The first official release from the Denver Police Department about these happenings came via this unusually conversational tweet:

A short time thereafter, the DPD tweeted, another attack took place that could have ties to the first:

Then came crime number three -- and the third DPD tweet in the series:

The man was arrested at approximately 7:30 p.m., according to 7News, which captured numerous shots of the suspect in custody -- including this one.

Did this individual attack the two women before he allegedly injured the officer? The DPD isn't ready to go quite that far yet, as this tweet indicates:

However, the proximity of the incidents, and the way the DPD has linked them in its public communication, suggests that investigators are actively looking into this possibility.

The suspect remains in custody at this writing. He has not yet been identified.
