Maddow's gone after Gessler before, notably in October 2011, when he sued Denver to prevent clerk Debra Johnson from mailing out ballots to voters who hadn't cast ballots the previous year; we've included those clips below as well.
For her latest salvo, however, Maddow focused on a number of events that you've read about in this space: a computer glitch that screwed up 800 registration attempts, letters that asked thousands to prove they're eligible voters, and problems with the state's website on the last day to register. Indeed, Maddow features a post by Sam Levin revealing that of fourteen voters removed from rolls as a result of Gessler's attempts to fight fraud, none had actually voted. In Westword's coverage, we've included explanations and justifications of these matters from Gessler's office. But clearly, Maddow isn't convinced. The segment features a backdrop labeled "Florida West" -- the implication being that the assorted botches by the Secretary of State could cause Colorado, a crucial swing state in the presidential contest, to become the sort of mess that struck the Sunshine State in the 2000 election. Not exactly the proudest potential legacy.
Look below to see last night's segment, followed by the two-parter from 2011.
