Last December, we embarked on a culinary sojourn that took us through our favorite dishes in the Mile High City -- one hundred, to be exact -- as a precursor to the Best of Denver issue. Now we're back with round two, counting down (in no particular order) a hundred more of our favorite Denver dishes in a list that, by our imperfect calculations, should be wrapped up by the time the Best of Denver 2011 hits the streets on March 31. In the meantime, if there's a dish you think we need to try, tell us about in the comments section below, or shoot us an e-mail at [email protected].
No. 96: Prosciutto-wrapped jalapeño poppers from Tony's Market
I typically don't eat on Thursdays -- at least not until around 4 p.m., which is about the time that those of us who write the Cafe Society blog commune for our weekly meeting at Tony's Market, right across the street from Westword headquarters, to hash out story ideas, brainstorm, compare hate mail, get a head start on the weekend by pouring alcoholic liquids down our throats, and keep the kitchen at Tony's busy with orders of the happy hour prosciutto-wrapped jalapeño poppers.
The jalapeños, plucked from the market's produce department, are hollowed out, smeared with cream cheese and wrapped with thin sheets of salty Italian ham, and while there are numerous incarnations of the exact same oval sculptures at joints all over town, there's something different about these -- something sadistically alluring that makes us mutter sweet-Jesus under our devilishly hot breath.
Hungry for more? All the dishes in our countdown are linked below:
No. 100: Italian wedding soup from the Squeaky Bean No. 99: American Classic Burger (and fries) from Tarbell's No. 98: E's clam linguini from Mangiamo Pronto No. 97: Queso a la plancha taco from the Pinche Tacos wagon
