When Bocadillo opened in June of 2012 in Sunnyside, partners Derek Dietz and Andrew Minhinnisk promised to unleash a Spanish sandwich revolution -- and for several months, that's exactly what they did, turning out traditional Spanish sandwiches (called bocadillos) and Spanish-influenced small bites (known as pintxos) to smitten crowds who couldn't get enough of the joint's terrific food and quirky atmosphere.

But last fall, Bocadillo shuttered when Dietz, who's also the chef, suddenly had to return to Philadelphia, where he grew up, because of a family emergency, and for the past several months, the restaurant lay dormant, giving Dietz and Minhinnisk time to ponder the concept and apply for a liquor license.
And late last week, Bocadillo reopened with wines, beers and spirits, a completely new menu and a slightly altered interior that now includes a DJ booth and a small, four-seat bar that peeks into the kitchen, where Dietz is now turning out globally-inspired plates -- gone are the sandwiches -- with an emphasis on France, a cuisine that Dietz knows well from his years as a student at the Culinary Institute of America.The hours have changed, as well, moving from a lunch-only spot to a dinner-only destination. "We always wanted to do dinner, but without a liquor license, it didn't make a lot of sense, but now that we have it, I'm really excited to get back into the kitchen and have a lot of fun with a new dinner menu," says Dietz, who's also offering a killer tasting menu for just $30 per person. And while the board is compact, Dietz notes that he'll also feature nightly specials, and even an occasional bocadillo.
Bocadillo is open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner, beginning at 4 p.m.
