Neighborhood Peruvian eatery Limón closed at the end of 2015, but owner Alex Gurevich didn't give up the space. Instead, he and managing partner Larry Lane converted it into a Southern eatery and whiskey bar called Bread-N-Butter, which opened on Tuesday night in Uptown.
The biggest changes to the interior are the addition of rustic wood elements and a larger bar that seats a dozen guests in front of whiskey-lined shelves. Look closely and you'll see robot-shaped light fixtures made from pipe fittings crawling among the bottles.
The menu itself represents a huge departure from the previous eatery's Novoandino cuisine. What you'll find instead is a roster of Southern-inspired fare: buttermilk hush puppies, fried-chicken bites and cheddar-cheese popovers on the "viddles" menu; po' boys, more fried chicken and shrimp 'n grits for mains; and biscuits, beans, corn bread and collards served as sides. For dessert, there's a strawberry moonshine hand pie and a red velvet cupcake.
To wash it all down, whiskey is the answer, with more than thirty bourbons and ryes originating everywhere from Kentucky and Tennessee to Colorado, Oregon and beyond. A healthy dose of Scotch whiskies rounds out the brown spirits list. House cocktails also rely heavily on whiskey, with a mint julep sweet tea and a shoofly punch, as well as such classic cocktails as a Manhattan and Vieux Carre.
Bread-N-Butter is open daily from 5 to 10 p.m.
