Denver doesn't have a great reputation as a barbecue town, but a string of new smokehouses have opened up this year to give the barbecue-starved new options for smoky goodness. Burt's Smokehouse BBQ in Centennial is the most recent to fire up; it's throwing a grand opening celebration this weekend with live entertainment and giveaways, including bottles of Burt's barbecue sauce -- until they run out. Our photographer, Danielle Lirette, stopped in yesterday to check out the 'cuing action.

Burt's is a family-owned place with three generations of wood-fired experience. Burt Levy's son Evan manages the restaurant and granddaughter Ariel, who grew up with sauce in her veins, is already pit boss at nineteen, while Evan's wife Dana runs the front of the house.

The menu is chock full of brisket, ribs, pork shoulder and sausage, slow-smoked on a custom barbecue pit built for the restaurant. The grand opening starts today; tomorrow will feature live music from Potcheen and American Idol contestant Matt Buckstein starting at 12:30 p.m. and running until 8 p.m. Guests this weekend will receive a bottle of Burt's BBQ Sauce with any order over $20 while supplies last and kids twelve and under will get free fountain drinks. Other giveaways include food samples & free T-shirts all weekend (also while supplies last).

Regular hours at Burt's will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays).
