Two new cafes have opened on the west side of town, one in Lakewood and one in an appendage of Denver that pokes into the spawling suburb just off Sheridan Boulevard. The French Press Cafe and Bakery (the second branch of the original in Aurora) was forced to close in Lakewood when the Union Boulevard shopping strip it called home was slated for demolition. The owners found a new home though, which opened this morning in Belmar.

A little farther south, the Copper Hound Coffee Co. opened on Saturday in a shopping center on South Sheridan Boulevard with the goal of servicing the surrounding neighborhoods -- Harvey Park, Mar Lee and Bear Valley -- in an area short on quality coffee.

"This is kind of a hole in the map," says Copper Hound owner Aaron Underwood, explaining his choice of neighborhoods. "There are only Starbucks inside grocery stores."

Underwood sources his beans from local roaster Commonwealth Coffee (whose co-founder Ryan Fischer will be Colorado's only representative in this year's the U.S. Coffee Championships). Pastries come from Denver's Iksuca Artisan Bakery. For something a little different, Copper Hound also offers an oatmeal "crowdie" -- a Scottish breakfast dish made from oats cold-steeped overnight in milk. Underwood's version -- "it's more like muesli than oatmeal," he explains -- includes smoked apple and a shot of espresso. In addition to coffee and cafe fare, Copper Hound has an additional 350 square feet of meeting space that groups can reserve.

The French Press is a breakfast and lunch cafe with a substantial menu of hot and cold dishes, including several varieties of eggs Benedict, pancakes, French toast, omelets and sandwiches. Drip-brewed and French press coffee are made with beans from Boulder Organic Coffee Co.

The Copper Hound is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., although the cafe's Facebook page says the doors may close as early as 8 p.m. until a customer base is established.

The French Press is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (opening at 7 a.m. on weekends).
