Denver Beer Fest will include beer ice cream, beer burlesque and yes, beer for breakfast

In September 2009, Denver's convention and visitors bureau decided to piggyback on the success of the Great American Beer Festival and this city's reputation as a beer Mecca by throwing Denver Beer Fest, a hastily organized but all-encompassing ten-day extravaganza featuring beer-related events of all kinds.

This year, Visit Denver is ahead of the game, and has already recruited numerous restaurants and other venues that want to participate, September 10-19.

In addition, the organization has rounded up several other longstanding but unrelated events and included them in the hype. Visit Denver today released a list of events it has confirmed so far.

Examples include Oktoberfest, September 17-19 and 24-26; the Bel Mar Festival Italiano, September 11-12; Brew at the Zoo, September 10; and New Belgium's Tour de Fat, September 11. GABF itself is September 16-18.

But there are a number of other cool things going on as well -- starting off with:

Beer and Breakfast

Yeah, you read that right. The idea that everyone has, but few have the guts to try.

"Last year during the beer fest, I had guests from Germany and I did beers for breakfast one morning and everyone enjoyed it. They had a blast," says Carl Schmidt, owner of the Capitol Hill Mansion Bed & Breakfast Inn. "So I said, 'Next year, I'm going to promote this.'"

And promote it he is. Anyone who stays the Capitol Hill Mansion between September 10-19, will be offered Rail Yard Ale from the Wynkoop Brewing Company during breakfast, 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Schmidt says he'll likely serve his smoked jalapeño cheddar Egg soufflé alongside the beer (see recipe here) because it will compliment Rail Yard.

Here's a list of a few more events that look like a lot of a fun. For more on Denver Beer Fest, check the website.

Colorado Beer Ice Cream Fest Sweet Action Ice Cream, 52 Broadway, will again feature ice creams made from Colorado beers. Last year, Sweet Action used brews from Great Divide, Breckenridge, Fort Collins, Ska, Avery and New Belgium.

Beer, Brats and Burlesque Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret will usher in the fest in style with a combination burlesque show from the Clocktower Clockettes and beer tasting (courtesy of Avery Brewing). In addition to the dancing and comedy show, there will be brats and drinking songs. The night gets started at 7 p.m. at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret.

Second City "Beer-Prov" The Second City Comedy troupe will be in town during Denver Beer Fest and will perform a special improvisational set on September 19. "Beer-Prov," at the Garner Galleria Theatre, will feature a beer theme and "a cast fueled by onstage beer consumption."
