When Penzeys Spices, a Wisconsin-based gourmet spice company with shops in cities around the country, announced it would open on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, it caused a flurry of controversy. That was because the new location is just around the corner from an outpost of Savory Spice Shop, a Colorado-grown chain peddling similar wares, which opened at 2041 Broadway in 2008. This announcement came after Penzeys opened a shop in Littleton just a block and a half away from another Savory Spice Shop on Main Street.

In June, Juliet Wittman reported that the Johnstons, who own Savory, welcome the competition, because in the case of the Littleton stores, the existence of both shops actually helped sales.

The Johnstons are about to find out if that will also hold true in Boulder. Penzeys, 1219 Pearl Street, opened for its first full day of business today (it was also open for a couple of hours yesterday).

Penzeys will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 303-447-2777.
