Le Grand Bistro & Oyster Bar, the latest effort by Robert Thompson (Argyll, Brasserie Rouge), opens today in the former home of Baur's. Lori Midson was there last week for a sneak peak of executive chef Sergio Romero's menu, which Thompson calls "everyday French comfort food," and her photos had readers drooling....and commenting.

Foodfun made it to Thursday night's preview party and reports:

It was off the hook!!! Had to be at least 300 people there. I tried oysters with champagne mignonette, steak tartare, smoked salmon pancakes with creme fraiche, head cheese (was delicious) and a duck confit on a potato chip with some kind of sherry gastrique. The place is beautiful, the food was stellar, the French wine went down like, well, French wine, and the staff was very pleasant considering how many food junkies were there attacking each plate of food as it came from the kitchen. They have this cuchon (pig) mural on the wall with all the breeds of France. Fun. Glad I got to attend.

If you missed Le Grand's party, you can still hit the goodbye party for The Hole , which sold its last doughnut yesterday. The Hole just lasted a year at 3877 Tennyson, but at least it's going out with a bash: The Hole will throw a closing party from noon to 11 p.m. today to thank its fans.
