Just got off the phone with Anthony, who couldn't have been any more polite -- or any less forthcoming -- about the story behind Simms Landing, the iconic Lakewood restaurant at 11911 West Sixth Avenue, a perch from which it has overlooked downtown Denver for more than thirty years, moving from ownership by the Peterson brothers to Landry's, now morphing into Simms Steakhouse.

Anthony, apparently, was in the middle of conducting an interview at said "steakhouse" when I got him on the horn, although that wasn't the reason he gave for refusing to tell me what was so famous about the "soon to be famous souffle bread" that's trumpeted on the new Simms Steakhouse website. "I'm sorry, but I can't comment," he informed me. "I'm not allowed to speak to press people. I'm following exactly what I'm told to do by corporate," he rehashed, sounding eerily like one of those robotic wind-up dolls.

Shortly thereafter, when I asked Anthony to verify his name, he told me he couldn't give me that either. "I'm sorry, you'll have to call corporate," he reiterated. Dude, that's some seriously funny shit when you're trying to serve the public.

Which is exactly what I told Anthony, who responded by giving me the digits for Landry's corporate offices, which I dialed, only to get some static-y voicemail announcing that I'd reached "technology support," and that the "help desk is on emergency, on-call status," whatever the hell that meant.

In any case, I did manage to get a small, albeit important, nugget of information from Anthony: Simms Steakhouse will open on Friday, June 12.

I just hope it's easier to order a steak there than it is to pry that tiny tidbit from the jaws of poor Anthony.

I'll keep looking for more info; in the meantime, post your memories of Simms Landing below.
