If you've been to a divorce party, you know that separations are no longer seen as the end of something, but rather the beginning. Still, not everyone likes to broadcast the news of a break-up, not even when it involves business rather than personal matters. Until I began fact-checking this week's review of Atticus, I was under the impression that the neighborhood spot not far from the University of Denver was operated by Table to Tavern restaurant group -- "Table" referring to the crew at Table 6 and "Tavern" referencing the owners of the next-door Boone's Tavern and the Handlebar Tavern by Washington Park. And that impression was correct. Sort of. See also: Atticus, a new restaurant fromTable to Tavern, will open next to Boone's When Table to Tavern was formed last summer, it was indeed a partnership between Pour Kids, owners of Boone's Tavern and Handlebar Tavern, and Table 6's Paradigm Restaurants. The goal of the new group, as Table to Tavern CEO Brian Midtbo told Lori Midson last fall, was to "take what we all do -- the fun of sports and the amazing food and service of Table 6 -- and meld them into one."

While Table 6 remained unchanged by the move -- although it did lose founding chef Scott Parker to Session Kitchen around the same time -- Boone's underwent a makeover, and the group began renovating the space next door to Boone's, which had been Fagan's for decades, into what would eventually become Atticus.

But while Aaron Forman of Table 6 helped develop Atticus's wine list and train its staff, the partnership dissolved in January, shortly before Atticus opened. Despite the parting, Midtbo has nothing but good things to say about his former partner. "Table 6 still is hands down the best service in town and that is Aaron's doing," Midtbo told me by e-mail. Atticus remains under the umbrella of Table to Tavern, which is owned by Brian Midtbo, Angie Midtbo and Rob Lanphier, who had been a co-owner of B.U.F.F. Brothers before he split in 2011 to found Pour Kids.
