  • Those cards weren't giveaways, Belmar attendees

From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. this past Wednesday, The Lab at Belmar hosted opening-night festivities in honor of new exhibitions entitled "The Astounding Problem of Andrew Novick" and "Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics." Unfortunately, some valuable items walked away along with the attendees after the bash concluded, as executive director Adam Lerner noted in an e-mail sent yesterday. It reads: Dear Friends, We gave away lots of free things to the 900 of you who came to Th

  • Updated: Adam Lerner to replace Cydney Payton as executive director of MCA Denver

MCA Denver. Update below: According to reliable sources, MCA Denver will soon announce that Adam Lerner, the director of the Lab at Belmar, is to be hired as its new executive director. The MCA is supposed to have mounted an international search, so it does seem strange that the institution wound up finding Cydney Payton's successor in Lakewood, of all places. So the news, though not unexpected, is something of a disappointment. One reason the selection isn't surprising has to do with the web

  • Wake-Up Call: Another contemporary art treasure in Denver

Michael Paglia posted the news first: Adam Lerner, head of the Laboratory of Art and Ideas in Lakewood, will take over as director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, replacing Cydney Payton, who exited last fall. And that's not all: In revealing the hire yesterday, the MCA board also announced that the Lab will merge with the museum, leaving its base in Belmar in April. Lakewood's loss -- and it's definitely a loss for the innovative Lab to abandon that new-urbanism outpost -- is Denve

  • Layoffs at the Lab and MCA: Job losses in the wake of Adam Lerner appointment

MCA Denver. Mark Falcone, head of the board at MCA Denver and the founder, former board chairman and current boardmember of the Lab at Belmar, is apparently running both not-for-profit institutions as though they were his own private business interests -- which they are not. With the announcement that Adam Lerner, the former director of the Lab (who was handpicked by Falcone for that post ), would be taking over a similar role at MCA, those "transformational" changes we've heard so much about h

  • The Lab at Belmar still on the lookout for missing art cards

A display rack that featured card art by Mark Brandl. As Michael Paglia reported in a blog published earlier today, all but one member of the Lab at Belmar's staff has been laid off in the wake of head Lab man Adam Lerner's appointment as new chief at MCA Denver. Nevertheless, the Lab faithful continue trying to fix a mess that cropped up in late January. At that time, folks attending an event walked away with numerous cards created by artist Mark Brandl, thinking they were giveaways -- which t
