  • Update: Westword Music Showcase line-up

Update: As with year's past, before the ink's even dry on the schedule, we've had to make made some minor more changes. Among the recent ones: We've moved the metal showcase from Andrew's to Broadways (two doors down from Bar Standard, next to the pawnshop), and moved the punk line-up to Bannock Street Garage. We've also added two additional acts  (the Culhanes and Buckner Funken Jazz), and swapped the time slots of a few others at Dazzle. And in case you missed it last week, Andrea Ball is

  • Mile High Makeout: All mixed up

While year-end lists are predominantly the province of journalists and critics, everyone can get in the act at the holidays with a year-end mixtape. These capstone compilations serve a very different purpose from the mixtapes you've made for girlfriends, boyfriends, spouses and - best of all - unrequited loves. Consider a year-end mixtape your opportunity to tell your friends and family (and, sure, unrequited loves) what you think they should be listening to.

  • Flier of the Week: Hello Kavita at the hi-dive

Today I woke up thinking, "Thursday already, and no Flier of the Week to light the way?" Then I saw this delightful work and knew the gods of graphic design had seen my plight and taken pity on me. The muted color palette and sea-creature graphic seem especially suited to this wet Thursday afternoon, don't they? The typograpy is great, too, and the whole thing is kind of cute, in a way that even dudes who don't go in much for cute (like me, for instance) can appreciate without feeling the need t

  • Girls Rock needs guitars (and anything else musical you've got)

Just received word of a cool new initiative to empower girls and get them involved with music called Girls Rock Denver. It's a non-profit volunteer group running a summer camp to teach girls an instrument, help them form bands and write songs and play a show at the Mercury Cafe. As a father of a daughter with musical inclinations, I can tell you first hand what an absolutely cool thing this is.

  • Westword Music Showcase reviewed: Mo's

Chad FahnestockJoshua Novak helped break in Mo's on Broadway. See more photos from Mo's and the other venues at westword.com/slideshow. Andrea Ball, 12:00 p.m. Andrea Ball kicked off the Mo's lineup with an enjoyable set of mostly piano-driven, literate yet approachable songs that fit well in the Mo's space, outfitted as it was with lots of comfy chairs and couches and a white-and-blue paint scheme. Ball's band -- a violinist, bassist and drummer -- seemed to have a lot of fun playing these s

  • Keeping up with the Johnsons

The Johnson family never ceases to amaze us with their extraordinary talent. From making music (Nathan Johnson, musician, Cinematic Underground) to making films (Rian Johnson, auteur, Brick and Brothers Bloom) to making records (Aaron Johnson, producer, God or Julie/ and the Fray), the Johnsons are an exceptional bunch. We were just reminded of this earlier today as we stumbled across the video for Katie Chastain's "Snowshow." Nathan directed the clip, posted above, this past June in Martha's

  • Boulder Acoustic Society continues to soundtrack Mayne Street and makes changes to its lineup

We're not big sportos around here. We know, right? Hard to imagine. Folks who spend all of their time writing about, talking about, listening to, thinking about and making music, you'd think we'd all be big jocks, especially since we live in such a huge sports town. That in mind, we're not sure how big of a deal this is, but we just heard that Mayne Street, a show hosted by ESPN Sports Center's Kenny Mayne, has reupped with the Boulder Acoustic Society to continue providing music for the show
