  • Yeasayer and Icy Demons at the Bluebird Theater

Yeasayer and Icy DemonsSaturday, November 29, 2008Bluebird TheaterBetter than: Flashbacks.Druggies, take notice: Yeasayer is a band you need to know. Between the trippy, hypnotic visuals provided by the lightball tree sculptures on stage and the wall-of-sound performance, this is a band that will help you get maximum mileage from your high. That doesn't mean that those less inclined to chemical explorations should shy away; for reasons of professionalism and general good sense, I saw this show a

  • Shockingly, the Fray captures top spot at Twist & Shout

The Fray dominates Twist & ShoutOkay, clearly we're being sarcastic with that headline, for it comes as very little surprise that the Fray captured the top spot at Twist & Shout this week. We're not privy to the actual SoundScan numbers yet, but suffice it to say, we're eager to see if interest the act has generated locally for its latest release will once again translate nationally. Behind the Fray, Bruce Springsteen, Animal Collective, P.O.S., Heartless Bastards and Bon Iver, among oth

Ah, another chaotic night at Rhinoceropolis. The first of six groups to take the, uh, floor was The Masculine, a quartet of young lads from Denver currently working their way through the Big Book o' Post-Punk Sounds; last night they alternated mostly between Chapter 4: The Fall, and Chap

  • Last Night: Animal Collective at the Boulder Theater

Alexis Johnson Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 The Boulder Theater, Boulder Better Than: Most shows going through Boulder these days. Brooklyn's Black Dice opened this show in what has lately become their typical fashion. Long gone, I suppose, were the harsh, brutally abrasive textures of old, replaced by something more, well, musical. Nonetheless, you're not likely to hear Black Dice on commercial radio anytime soon, because the threesome still blasted out sculpted chunks of jagged white noise, the g

  • NPR's All Songs Considered weighs in on the best music of 2009

Last time we checked, there's still a good four months left until the end of the year. Regardless, that hasn't stopped Bob Boilen and company from NPR's All Songs Considered from weighing in on the best music of 2009 (so far). Actually, check that -- the results, which were posted on the show's blog last week, were evidently voted on by the listeners, who apparently really, really dig Animal Collective. Take a look at their picks after the jump and see if you agree. Did they get it right, or

  • Heavy Rotation, our top spins for the week of August 24, 2009

As music critics, the most common question we get asked (and ask each other, for that matter) is, "What are you listening to?" The pervasiveness of this query is precisely what inspired Heavy Rotation, our latest feature. For the benefit of those who happen to be curious, we've compiled a list of all the things we're listening to this week. Feel free to chime in with picks of your own after the jump.

Modeselektor Body Language Vol. 8 Get Physical Music On Modeselektor's Body Language mix, the duo show an inventive and exciting approach to track selection and mixing. It's not easy to pull together a set that includes everything from Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes to Animal Collective, with lots of space in between for material such as Robert Hood's "Unix" and a couple of Modeselektor's own technolicious tracks. Despite the omnivorous, anything-good-goes approach, the disc has an excell

  • Freeloader: Win tickets to see the Dodos tonight at the Bluebird

Charlie VillyardMore Freeloader tickets. Today: The Dodos at the Bluebird. Heard of 'em? They're great. If you haven't, here's what Jason Heller had to say about them in this week's issue: Unlike their sonic brethren the Animal Collective on the East Coast, San Francisco's the Dodos keep it simple -- but hardly stupid. Steeped in psychedelic folk and classic pop, leader Meric Long and crew focus on tattered guitars, huge yet warm drums and the kinds of melodies and harmonies that bands once s
