Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite as seen through the lens of Jon SolomonMogwai, Women Tuesday, May 12, 2009 Bluebird Theater Better than: Listening to layered and nuanced instrumental music as background. Instrumental music is not dead. For all the prominence of vocal-driven music in the modern pop scene, a careful and dynamic approach to the subtleties of instrumental music can still draw a loyal fan base -- and a considerable crowd. The durability of such a carefully constructed sound was on full

  • Mini Q&A with the Fluid's John Robinson

The Fluid's John Robinson live at the Bluebird Theater last June. In addition to an appearance by profile and Q&A subject Built to Spill, this Saturday's Westword Music Showcase (click here for details) will include another bonus: an appearance by the Fluid, among the best bands and most influential groups ever to emerge from the Denver scene. Last year, the band, fronted by John Robinson, headlined a couple of area gigs -- their first in fifteen years -- as warm-ups for an appearance at a Seat

  • Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Frank Black shows annouced

The Flaming Lips know all about putting on a hell of a show, and the Monolith Festival gig at Red Rocks in 2007 was one most phenomenal things to happen to that venue in the last few years. Tickets, which run from $36.75 to $46.50, go on sale Saturday, June 20 at 10 a.m. And as an added bonus, all tick

Headline says it all -- as does the eye-catching flier to your left. If you came out to the Westword Music Showcase over the past few years, you already have an idea of what to expect tonight at Bar Standard when Home, Death Hickey Blues, Aloft in the Sundry and Meniskus take the stage on this inaugural bill, breaking in this brand new night. Should be an excellent show. On a related note, tonight's gig is slated to be one of Aloft in the Sundry's last until late August, when the outfit is set t

Last fall, they knocked out album helmed by famed producer Andy Johns at George Lucas' Skywalker Studios and they'll be hitting the Fillmore Auditorium Frid

The two-piece Eagle Twin kicked off the show in high spirits. Although mining similar artistic territory as Isis, Twin brought its own take on experimental metal. • Over the weekend: Bat for Lashes at the Bluebird Theater

Doug BeamBat For Lashes, Other Lives Bluebird Theater Saturday, August 22, 2009 Better Than: See bands with technical ability but no imagination. Openers Other Lives started out with a lush, orchestral, folk-inflected pop song that reminded me a bit of Arab Strap, without the bile and the Scottish accents. It would have been easy to write Other Lives off as yet another adherent to the Radiohead school of atmospheric music but something about the band's songs went beyond something so obvious.

Michael MullerMumiy Troll from Vladivostok, Russia is one of that country's most popular bands. The act's combination of energetic rock and moodily atmospheric pop, for which lead singer Ilya Lagutenko coined the term "rockapops," has been gaining popularity in America despite the fact that, up to the release of the new English-language EP Paradise Ahead, the band's albums are all in Russian. Anyone lucky enough to have seen Mumiy Troll's recent U.S. tours witnessed a lively and charismatic p

Lori Midson Colfax Avenue has plenty of places to drink, as we prove with our profile of the Nob Hill Inn. But there's also good food along America's longest main street. Including: Bastien's Restaurant 3501 East Colfax Avenue., 303-322-0363. Bastien's isn't retro; the rest of the world is. Looking for the cocktail culture of the ´50s? Bastien's has it.
