  • Joe Satriani suing Coldplay for plagiarism

Guitar virtuoso/noodler extraordinaire Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay, claiming the band's song "Viva la Vida," title tack from their latest opus, lifts a riff from his 2004 track "If I Could Fly." I can't be the only one who finds this utterly bizarre. Admittedly, my knowledge of both Satriani's guitar histrionics and Coldplay's epic mopiness is fairly limited, but it seems pretty hard to believe that Coldplay is ripping him off. Bends-era Radiohead, yes, obviously. But Satriani? Really? Seems

  • The Fray's new album panned in Rolling Stone

Well, the first review is in. Two stars. In the brand-new issue of Rolling Stone, which just hit stands over the weekend, the mag gives the Fray's forthcoming full-length, the hotly anticipated, self-titled followup to How to Save a Life, due in stores next Tuesday, two stars out of five. Review highlights: "No big changes are afoot for Disc Two: The band's piano rock suggests a more earnest, less arty Coldplay." Coldplay...hmm...now, that's a fresh take.

  • Week in Review: 1/26/09 - 1/30/09

In terms of music news this was a slower week in the Mile High City. The biggest items were news of Overcasters being invited to perform at South By Southwest on the heels of a particularly harrowing trip to the East Coast a few weeks ago with the Fluid, followed closely by DJ Vajra's inclusion in a Serato Scratch ad in BPM Magazine. This week, the first review of the Fray's new record also came down from Rolling Stone, who panned it and tossed in a Coldplay comparison for good measure. Beyond

  • Meet the Fraysayers

Dull. Boring. Formulaic. Uniformly bland. Uninteresting. Calculated. Inoffensive. Forgettable. These are just a few of the adjectives that various critics from across the country have used to describe the Fray's self-titled sophomore release. As observed in this column last week, the band is clearly resonating with its fans -- earlier this week, the outfit checked in at number one on Billboard's Top 200, besting the Boss, no less -- while taking just an absolute beating from the critics. After t

  • Last Night's Show: The Rouge at Red Rocks

Kiernan Maletsky Imagine that you are a member of the Rouge. You've just completed your first tour. One of the stops was at L.A.'s Knitting Factory, where you played for six labels and a couple of them showed interest. Less than a week later, you come home and play Red Rocks, which I hear is a big deal.  Imagine the feeling of stepping onto that stage, hollowed ground, only a couple years removed from living in a tent in your friend's backyard in Baker. Can you imagine what that would feel l
