  • Denver bands announced for SXSW

While it's still a bit early, the official list of Denver acts invited to play SXSW seems pretty narrow. Given the extraordinary talent we have here, we're guessing that the number of artists who submitted this year is down and that this is really more of a reflection of the economy -- bands weighing the cost versus the benefits -- than on the worthiness of the music being made here. Not that the bands selected thus far (Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Wovenhand and Meese) don't merit inclusion or aren

  • Update: Lineup for Mile Hi-Fidelity day party at SXSW close to being confirmed

Photo: Anthony Camera Party boys: Dan Rutherford (center) and Adam Lancaster (right). So, just got off the phone with Adam Lancaster (Morning After Records, Curious Yellow), and the lineup for the Mile Hi-Fidelity party in Austin is close to being completely confirmed. Wait? What? Mile Hi-Fidelity? Isn't that the name of your radio show, you ask? Indeed. And while, yes, the show and the station (101.5FM) are co-sponsoring the event, the party actually came first, three years earlier in Austin. Th

  • Denver-based Max3 launches artist-friendly digital distro with free beer

The Photo Atlas and the Still City will be playing this Thursday night at the Marquis Theater. In itself, that might not seem so noteworthy. Sure, the Photo Atlas has been receiving some great national press lately, and the Still City is one of the best bands I haven't seen. What makes this show really remarkable, however, is that it is in honor of the launch of a new Denver-based digital distribution company called Max3. Oh, and there's free beer (if you RSVP)! Sounds like just the right plac

  • Westword Music Showcase Awards Wrap Up

David BarberJohn Baxter and Matty Clark in the fleshThe picture above pretty much tells the tale of last night's Westword Music Showcase Awards -- drunk and debaucherous. Everyone (well, we think everyone -- we didn't exactly take a formal poll or anything) had a pretty swell time. Hugs were smiles were plentiful, as was the booze that flowed freely before the ceremony kicked off. There were a few miscues, but all in all everything went off without a hitch. Special thanks to all the folks who gr

  • Q&A with Nathan McGarvey

Black Mountain StudiosHearts of Palm started out in the winter of 2006 as a pop song writing collaboration between former Roper and Black Black Ocean guitarist Stephen Till and longtime friend Nathan McGarvey. Within the following year, the project expanded to eight plus members and the band's sound went from a spare and earnest beauty to an exuberant and impassioned exorcism of melancholy moods. During the course of the band's existence, it won accolades from critics and fans alike and relea
