  • Making it with the Denver Public Library

Snuggly germs, courtesy of DPL.Is it just us or does "I Made It With the Library" sound dirty? That being said, the Denver Public Library's unintentionally naughty webpage is pretty cool. Crafters are encouraged to post photos of stuff they've made with the help of do-it-yourself books from the library. Already featured are a paper flower vase, garden compost, a wooden dresser (props to that lady!) and best of all, a plush germ. Like a virus you can snuggle. So awesome. Make your way to "I Mad

  • Wake-Up Call: Another contemporary art treasure in Denver

Michael Paglia posted the news first: Adam Lerner, head of the Laboratory of Art and Ideas in Lakewood, will take over as director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, replacing Cydney Payton, who exited last fall. And that's not all: In revealing the hire yesterday, the MCA board also announced that the Lab will merge with the museum, leaving its base in Belmar in April. Lakewood's loss -- and it's definitely a loss for the innovative Lab to abandon that new-urbanism outpost -- is Denve

  • Mile Haiku: Video from the Blue Mustang poetry reading

Almost a hundred people piled into the Denver Public Library basement on Monday to write, read and hear poetry inspired by DIA's Blue Mustang. Organized by Westword, the event... happened. We think it was a success, but we don't plan many poetry slams, so it's hard to say. Anyway, a few of the poems were captured by our own Jared Jacang Maher, and you can hear them above. The first, local cool guy Jared Berger (aka Ofosho), won over the crowd and took home the top honors. Our favorite is the

  • Denver Public Library is down with social media -- and wants you to get down too

Photo by KM NewnhamThe Denver Public Library is embracing this whole new media/social media thing wholeheartedly. They're active Twits: @DenverLibrary is the basic account, plus there's the account for the library's Fresh City Life program @FreshCityLife and others as well. You an find both of those on Facebook, too: DPL here and Fresh City Life here. They've also just launched a new podcast called The Bookie Report, a five-minute rundown of cool things to do in and around Denver (not all libra

  • Denver Public Library: Hooking you up with downloadable movies, audiobooks and eBooks

Number 5 is alive, downloadable and free....If you're stuck at home, poor and bored, the Denver Public Library has got you covered. Forget going into the library for your fix of books and movies -- that's so 20th century. Thanks to the digital revolution, these days there's no reason to leave the couch, much less the house. And while the lawless hordes have been enjoying free downloads forever, us law-abiding types have lagged a little behind. No more. All you need to get going is a libr

  • Huddled masses yearn to breathe free -- and check out Harry Potter

The Denver Public Library hosted a naturalization ceremony for more than a hundred new citizens from dozens of countries Thursday morning. The ceremony has been a tradition at DPL for more than a decade, and why not? As several speakers noted in welcoming the crowd of new Americans, citizenship and libraries seem to go together.

  • Check out the sweet skullduggery at the Denver Public Library

"Colorado": Celebrating the home state. Halloween is long gone, but the Day of the Dead is a holiday that keeps on giving. An exhibit in the grand hall of the downtown Denver Public Library features staff-produced riffs on the tradition of decorated sugar skulls that provides -- well, plenty of food for thought. We could rattle on about the adornment or masking of death, substituting celebration for fear, or the use of a universal typology in the service of culture-specific themes. Or w
