  • Lancer Lounge kitchen is on the rocks...again

The Lancer Lounge at 233 Seventh Avenue is one of this town's great dives, a spot where you can always count on a collegial evening of drinking, as Drew Bixby recently reported in Drunk of the Week. What you can't count on is finding food there. The most recent tenant of the Lancer's kitchen, Sweet Baby Anna's, has moved on, the latest in a long series of operators. Our personal favorite was a combo Salvadoran/Japanese outfit, which had a brief run at the Lancer a dozen years

View Westword.com's Map of the Bars in a larger map Because we are, by and large, a bunch of drunks, every week we feature at least one bar. One week, it's Drew Bixby braving some unchartered watering hole with his "Drunk of the Week." The next, it's Nancy Levine discovering some creatively poured, creatively named "Drink of the Week" in a usually (but not always) shinier establishment. We've been doing this for years, so we decided to throw together a map of all the places we've visited, with

Club 404, one of Denver's top-ten dives. What's your favorite dive bar in Denver? Drew Bixby, our Drunk of the Week columnist, features nearly a hundred great lounges, taverns and saloons in his book Denver's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the Mile-High City, due out November 3. But while Bixby includes a list of the city's ten best dives, he doesn't pick a favorite. That's up to you! Post your nomination for the very best dive bar in the metro area below, and we'll count the vo

Is this the best dive bar in Denver?Last week we asked for your favorite dive (among the nominees: El Chapultepec, Lancer Lounge, Squire, PS Lounge, BarBar, Berkeley, Charlie Brown's Lion's Lair). Now it's time to prove your devotion: Write a love letter/tribute to your favorite dive bar, professing sincere fidelity to its wood paneling and nicotine-stained ceiling tiles; its five-plays-for-a-buck jukebox and pain-med-dispensing vending machine; its stiff pours and loose staff that inspi

  • Dive in to Denver's Best Dive Bars this week

Drew Bixby, Westword Drunk of the Week columnist, has dedicated countless hours -- and his liver -- to researching the town's true dives. The result is a new book, Denver's Best Dive Bars: Drinking & Diving in the Mile High City, which will be toasted at a series of events this week. First up: Bixby will be talking about his book at 10 p.m. tonight during Open Mic Comedy at the Squire, a bar at 1800 East Colfax Avenue that definitely qualifies as one of the town's classic dives. Celebrate the town's best dives at 8 p.m. tonight, when Club 404, the joint at 404 Broadway that Jerry Feld has owned for more than fifty years, hosts the launch party for Drew Bixby's Denver's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the Mile High City. Bixby will be on hand, of course, as will some of the regulars who make Club 404 such a classic. Join the club.

How do you know you're in a classic dive? It helps if the owner stands up and welcomes you to his place -- the place he's had for 58 years, and bought before he was old enough to own it legally. Jerry Feld bought the bar at 404 Broadway back in 1951, and he's run Club 404 ever since -- even though, as he told the crowd assembled for the launch of Drew Bixby's Denver's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the Mile High City, he initially thought he'd sell it for big bucks after a few
