  • A first look at the Fray's new documentary

Just attended a private screening at Starz FilmCenter of Fair Fight, a brand-new documentary focusing on the Fray that chronicles the making of the act's forthcoming album. The film was directed by Rod Blackhurst, a onetime merch guy who's been trailing the band for the better part of three years, essentially documenting their every breath. According to Kelly Magelky, another talented director who's been shooting the Fray himself for a number of years and who edited Fight, Blackhurst presented

  • Q&A with Dan Whitford of Cut Copy

The Cut Copy profile in this week's issue contains only excerpts of our recent chat with Dan Whitford and merely scratches the surface of our exchange. Needless to say, Whitford had much much more to say about the act's sound, he and his bandmates' progression as musicians, recording the album, the inspiration for the artwork and much more. Read the entire conversation after the jump.

  • Mile High Music Festival Q&A: Davy Knowles

In an industry littered with tween pop stars and Disney Channel minions, it's refreshing to come across an artist whose work isn't a medley of foot-tapping drivel swathed with AutoTune. Equipped with awe-inducing guitar skills and a hauntingly intense wail, 22-year-old Davy Knowles is quickly making a name for himself in the world of Blues. With the help of his band, Back Door Slam, this Isle of Man native is producing an old-school sound that invites comparison to legendary bluesmen like Stevie

  • Heavy Rotation, our top spins for the week of August 24, 2009

As music critics, the most common question we get asked (and ask each other, for that matter) is, "What are you listening to?" The pervasiveness of this query is precisely what inspired Heavy Rotation, our latest feature. For the benefit of those who happen to be curious, we've compiled a list of all the things we're listening to this week. Feel free to chime in with picks of your own after the jump.

Kiernan Maletsky Pictureplane, Josephine and the Mousepeople, Hideous Men Rhinoceropolis August 28, 2009 Better Than: Getting high at a planetarium. Not that I would know. This sort of feels like Travis Egedy's shot. As Pictureplane, he's got the national press (from Fader and Pitchfork) and a new album, Dark Rift, with some really, really good music on it, music that makes me think he truly believes the revolution is coming in one form or another. He takes the album and the attentio

  • Dino Costa joins The Truth

For the past several weekends, The Truth, at 101.5 FM, has broadcast music, as opposed to offering the sort of right-wing syndicated blather that dominates its airwaves Monday through Friday. But this particular aspect of its format has already gone through as many personalities as the famously three-faced Eve. First up: full-monty stripper music reminiscent of the stunt format called The Pole. Then soft-rock and easy-listening fare. And finally, a schizophrenic blend of the two, with som

  • Q&A with Corey Teruya of Hello Kavita

Todd RoethIt's been a year and a half since Hello Kavita graced us with its debut long-player, the unforgettable And Then We Turned Sideways. Since then, the quintet of songwriter/frontman/guitarist Corey Teruya, guitarist Luke Mossman, multi-instrumentalist Ian Short, bassist Jimmy Stofer and drummer Leor Manelis seems only to have grown and deepened its commitment warm, honest, countrified rock. We were fortunate to grab a few minutes with Teruya on the eve of the release of the band's stun
