  • Beer and Cheer: Isolation Ale

Isolation Ale Odell Brewing Company Fort Collins Isolation Ale is one of several local winter warmers - Avery's Old Jubilation, Boulder Beer's Never Summer and Breckenridge Brewery's Christmas Ale among them. But this traditional English-style strong ale is lighter and easier to drink than some of the others. It's a caramel-colored, almost red beer with a frothy head and some good hops. It also has some of that rich, malty feel -- but not quite enough to keep me warm on the coldest nights. --

  • Ozric Tentacles moves to Fort Collins

Received word over the weekend from Chris Kresge, aka Chris K, the host of Colorado Sound on KRFC in Fort Collins, that Ozric Tentacles, a lauded British prog-rock act with 25 releases to its credit in its nearly quarter century existence, has relocated to the Fort. Word comes on the heels of news that recent Grammy nominee OneRepublic is reportedly in the process of setting up shop in Denver. We've also learned that a certain well known underground hip-hop artist who's been spotted around tow

  • A preview of Immortal Dominion's forthcoming album

Immortal Dominion, the monster metal unit out of Fort Collins, has recently completed tracking its brand new album. After spending five weeks in the studio with renown producer Sterling Winfield, who's overseen albums by Mercyful Fate, Pantera and Hell Yeah, among others, the platter has been shipped off to Airshow for mastering. While the new material definitely possesses the act's distinctive stamp of intensity, there's also moments that are surprisingly melodic and accessible. The band compil

In recent years, Fort Collins has produced and fostered its fair share of acts, from Brotherhood of Dae Han and the Heyday to Set Forth and Roe. Now our neighbor to the north has its very own local-music festival, thanks to the fine folks at the Fort Collins Musicians Association. The event, dubbed Fort Collins Music eXperiment, FoCoMX for short, will coincide with the city's local-music appreciation month, is slated to take place over the course of two days at various venues across the city on

  • Chicken fingers and drive-in movies, that's what Fort Collins does!

A Flickr PhotoMy mouth is watering uncontrollably. I love chicken fingers. And the drive-in. One of these loves is new-found and the other is a classic, but my adoration for both was renewed this week when I took a trip to Fort Collins. And since this is a food blog, let's focus on the chicken fingers. My standard for chicken fingers is IHop. It is the control on which I base any other breaded, fried tender of chicken. It is my fallback, where I go for non-offensive, respectable, expected poul

  • Rich Bircumshaw, voice of CSU Rams, dies

Rich Bircumshaw. The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports in this article that Rich Bircumshaw, news director of KCOL radio and the official voice of the Colorado State University Rams, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke yesterday -- and unfortunately, he was unable to recover. A spokeswoman for KCOL, a Clear Channel property, confirms that Bircumshaw died during the night. This morning, the station is airing tributes to the 54-year-old broadcaster, who took the CSU post earlier this decade p

  • Fort Collins Coloradoan's Denver printing switch starts today

As you can see by the adjacent logo, the Fort Collins Coloradoan's slogan is, "Bringing Fort Collins Home." But beginning today, the company responsible for bringing the Coloradoan to Fort Collins is the Denver Newspaper Agency. Back on March 11, rumors began circulating about a deal between the Coloradoan and the DNA that would result in the closure of the Fort Collins paper's printing plant and the loss of more than forty jobs -- gossip that was confirmed later that morning in a Coloradoan

  • Closure of Fort Collins Now marks end of era in great Northern Colorado weekly newspaper war

An image from the last edition of "Fort Collins Now." Today marks the final edition of Fort Collins Now, a weekly newspaper that built up a considerable following dating to 2003, when it was born as the Fort Collins Weekly. Indeed, Northern Colorado as a whole was practically bursting at the seams with weeklies a few short years ago, as was noted in "Paper Chase," a December 2006 Message column. Back then, a genuine newspaper war was underway, with the Weekly competing against four other signi

  • Missed FoCoMx? No worries. Check this out.

Last month, the Fort Collins Music Association hosted the area's first ever all local music festival, dubbed the Fort Collins Music Experiment (FoCoMx for short). As hard to believe as it is that such an event never existed until this year, it's not difficult to see that the supply definitely exists to generate such a demand. Fact is, the Northern Colorado scene is just exploding with an array of exciting acts from the established bands you're likely already aware of such as Tickle Me Pink, the

Gelazzi, the gelateria at 1411 Larimer Street, with additional shops in Fort Collins and Highlands Ranch, is making its television debut tonight, June 8, at 7 p.m. on Food Network's Unwrapped, the popular show hosted by Marc Summers that explores America's most classic foods. (Think peanut butter, bubblegum and fried chicken.) I have absolutely no clue what's American or classic about Gelazzi's alcohol-sodden gelatinis (gelato mixed with liquors and/or liqueurs), which are the highlight of tonig

Add Boulder-by-way-of-Ft Collins band Nautical Mile to the rapidly expanding roster of bands vying for your attention. Featuring Rachel Cummings providing the frontman, er, frontwoman duties (and doing a damn fine job I might add), along with the young but refreshingly polished supporting cast of guitarist James Anderson, drummer Austin Rosen, guitarist Jake Putnicki and bassist Zac

  • Silver Mine Subs tapped out in Denver

"Around 1996, two guys were sitting around discussing their future. It was soon decided to leave the Midwest and travel to the base of the Rockies to seek fame and fortune, and that's when they developed a 'nugget' of an idea for a fast food operation," says the Silver Mine Subs website "A little over ten years later, Silver Mine Subs is serving customers in more than 20 locations nationwide in six states, and expanding nationally." But it's contracting in Denver. While there are still

  • Party time in Fort Collins after CSU beat CU -- and before the rubber bullets started flying

Last night, Colorado State University fans descended on downtown Fort Collins to celebrate the Rams' out-of-the-blue 23-17 victory over the heavily favored CU Buffs in this year's Rocky Mountain Showdown. But what began as a good time devolved into a bummer when cops used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. CU cops feared trouble at the game itself, held at Folsom Field in Boulder, and according to the Boulder Daily Camera, 75 fans were eventually ejected. But no one seems to have anticipated

  • Balloon Boy: A nation turns its lonely eyes to you

When you woke up this morning, did you think you'd be riveted by the story of a Fort Collins kid who may or may not have floated away in a silvery balloon? And if so, are you being treated for assorted ailments at the Capitol Hill Medicine Shoppe? At this point, none of the reporters with the approximately seven gazillion media outlets covering this bizarro tale know what the hell's going on, including our colleagues at the Village Voice, who've been breathlessly updating each development, fro

  • Balloon Boy family's craziness may be contagious

The latest developments in the Balloon Boy case -- i.e., Larimer County authorities declaring the whole thing to have been a hoax -- seem to have frayed the nerves of the Heene family's Fort Collins neighbors. Clips like this one from Friday, in which a woman defends the clan ("This was not a joke!" she declares), have given way to expressions of betrayal exemplified by the clip after the jump. Even more extreme is footage aired last night by Channel 7: In it, a nearby resident chewing out repo

The news is full of real stories about real people in need. People who can't find jobs, people who can't pay their mortgages, people who can't feed their families. Not high on the list of the truly needy: People who want to feed their hunger for fame. But still, Cheri Foster and her daughter, Tamara Failla, have established what they call the "first-ever" Fort Collins Care Movement, according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan. And who have they chosen to as the initial recipient of their ca
