  • Friend or pho? Ha Noi case goes to trial

Denver's pho restaurants have seen some tough times lately. Last month, a car crashed into Pho 7, knocking the joint out of commission for a few days. Times were even tougher at Ha Noi Pho, our Best Taste of Hanoi in the Best of Denver 2007. Soon after we bestowed that honor, the pho spot at 1036 South Federal Boulevard was the site of a shootout between two Denver officers who happened to be lunching at the place and Phuong Van Dang, who came in with a shotgun. Four people were injured in the

  • Guilty verdict in Ha Noi Pho Case

Yesterday, a Denver jury convicted Phuong Van Dang of attempted first-degree assault on a peace officer, attempted aggravated robbery and a whole one-from-column-A, one-from-column-B menu of other charges connected to an incident last fall at Ha Noi Pho, at 1036 South Federal Boulevard. Dang was armed with a shotgun and wearing a mask when he walked into the restaurant, our Best Taste of Hanoi in 2007, intending to rob it -- but two Denver police officers happened to be lunching there. A sh

  • Ha Noi Pho gunman gets 330 year sentence

On November 14, 2007, Phung Van Dang, toting a shotgun, entered Ha Noi Pho's kitchen intent on robbery, but wound up shooting it out with detectives in plainclothes who were lunching in the restaurant at 1036 South Federal. Today Denver District Judge Martin Egelhoff sentenced Dang, a habitual offender, to 330 years in jail -- the maximum 24 years on all eleven counts of attempted aggravated robbery. He's off to prison -- and Ha Noi Pho is still in business, serving up what Jason Sheehan named th

  • Developing: Ha Noi Pho no mo'

Bad news for you fans of serious Vietnamese food: Ha Noi Pho, my Best Taste of Hanoi, has been sold. This happened just yesterday, but already the joint is operating under another name: Can Tho Pho. At least according to the sign out front at 1036 South Federal. When I put in a call just a few minutes ago (silently hoping that my very dependable Vietnamese restaurant source had, somehow, gotten this one wrong), the voice on the other end clearly said...something.  Followed by "Ha Noi Pho, can I

  • Roll call: Restaurant openings and closings since January 1

We're working hard to stay on top of the restaurant industry news -- a challenging task in these uncertain times. Whenever we hear of restaurants opening or closing, we post it on this blog; now we're going to start summarizing the action at the end of the month. And there's been plenty of action in 2009. For starters, we lost Ha Noi Pho, the restaurant at 1036 South Federal Boulevard that served great Vietnamese breakfasts and was also the site of a dramatic police shootout in the fall of 2007

  • Breakfast on the other side of the world

I sat with my book and asked for tea. The host brought me a pot of fresh green tea, loose-leaf, still steeping. I opened my book, thinking I would have to wait for the first cart to come my way, but but the cart ladies, having spied me, descended like smiling, dive-bombing Stukkas. "Dumplings? Shrimp and pork." I nodded. "Pork and shrimp?" I nodded. "Shrimp with mushrooms and pork?" I dithered. "It's new. Just made." I nodded. Star Kitchen just opened a few months ago, but it opened wi

  • Best of Denver 2009: Bread alert

The 25th annual Best of Denver issue officially hits the streets (and this site) on March 26, and now that the hundred-plus food awards have been decided, I'm revisiting some of my favorite tales from this year's always-weird awards process.  Kinda like encounter therapy, and cheaper than going to a shrink. Besides, people always have questions after the Best of Denver comes out regarding how, exactly, I managed to arrive at my picks.  They usually frame their curiosity in the form of

Mark MangerAnother smiling customer at Pho 95 We all watched as the little girl with the blue leotard and blonde hair staggered on the mats. We all watched as she stood there, staring blindly out into the crowd, glancing up at the uneven bars, furrowing her small brows. Everyone in the place was watching. The room was quiet. Not silent (that would've only happened in the movie version of this moment), but expectant. "She's gotta get back up there," said a man at a table on the other
