  • Update: Westword Music Showcase line-up

Update: As with year's past, before the ink's even dry on the schedule, we've had to make made some minor more changes. Among the recent ones: We've moved the metal showcase from Andrew's to Broadways (two doors down from Bar Standard, next to the pawnshop), and moved the punk line-up to Bannock Street Garage. We've also added two additional acts  (the Culhanes and Buckner Funken Jazz), and swapped the time slots of a few others at Dazzle. And in case you missed it last week, Andrea Ball is

  • Bela Karoli in the studio with Ian Cooke

Bela Karoli has been in Helmet Room Studio working on the follow-up to band's outstanding debut, Furnished Rooms. Tentatively titled, Digital Sixes, the album will feature members Julie Davis (vocals, bass), Brigid McAuliffe (accordion, vocals), Carrie Beeder (violin, cello) and James Han (keyboards), as well as some help from cellist/singer Ian Cooke and possibly Nathaniel Rateliff of Born in the Flood and the Wheel. The band's December 6 show at the Gothic Theatre with Everything Absent or Dis

  • Born in the Flood to preview new album Friday at the Bluebird

Just got word that Born in the Flood will be previewing material for a new album on Friday, December 12, at the Bluebird. That show was already looking like a can't-miss proposition (Born in the Flood, Ian Cooke, Iuengliss, Bad Weather California are only about half the highlights of the lineup), but add in the chance to preview what should be one of the best local records of 2009, and this looks like it could be the place to be Friday. Need more encouragment? The group also says that this is th

  • Talking during shows: the musicians' perspective - Gene Davis

This week's Beatdown deals with the whole idea of talking during shows, as it seems like a fairly frequent occurrence regardless of who's performing. I offered up a few viable theories as to why it happens and asserted that, for the most part, I sincerely don't believe that anyone truly intends to be disruptive or disrespectful by carrying on conversations while the players are playing. Naturally, as I pondered things from the fans' perspective, I wondered how the chatter affects the performers,

In a beautiful collision of altruism, more musicians are donating their time and talents to help kids this week. Instead of helping the children of Denver, as the Denver Gives March Music Jam will, these musicians will benefit kids on the other side of the world. On Friday night, March 27, at the Driscoll Ballroom on the DU campus, you can catch a world-class lineup for a mere ten clams. The indomitable Ian Cooke, the captivating Joshua Novak and the powerfully charming Hello Kavita will all con

Chad FahnestockJoshua Novak helped break in Mo's on Broadway. See more photos from Mo's and the other venues at westword.com/slideshow. Andrea Ball, 12:00 p.m. Andrea Ball kicked off the Mo's lineup with an enjoyable set of mostly piano-driven, literate yet approachable songs that fit well in the Mo's space, outfitted as it was with lots of comfy chairs and couches and a white-and-blue paint scheme. Ball's band -- a violinist, bassist and drummer -- seemed to have a lot of fun playing these s

Although the members intend to continue to collaborate and record music with one another, there's no plans to perform together live again -- until such time comes when an inevitable reunion years down the road beckons them to.
