  • The Fray's new single makes its debut

Update: This afternoon, the Fray posted a viral video on its MySpace page, and sent out a bulletin explaining the meaning behind the words to "You Found Me." We've posted both after the jump, along with the lyrics. The Fray's new single, as previously reported, debuted last night during Grey's Anatomy by way of a promo for the new season of Lost. The piano-driven tune titled, "You Found Me," is a quintessential Fray track built around the distinctive emotive vocals and phrasing of Isaac Slad

  • The Fray's American Music Awards performance

Just caught the Fray on the American Music Awards. Tonight's AMA performance marked the live debut of "You Found Me," the first single from the Fray's forthcoming self-titled album, due on on February 3. Isaac Slade's vocals seemed a bit shaky during the intro verse, but overall, the band's performance was pretty decent (bonus points for having Jeff Linsenmaier play tambourine in the background -- that was Jeff, right?). BTW, in case you missed it, we updated the previous blog entry about the

  • The Fray's "You Found Me" video premieres

The Fray's video for "You Found Me," the first single from the act's forthcoming self-titled disc, made its online debut Tuesday night on VH1.com. The clip, directed by Bear Creek High School alumni Josh Forbes -- who's also worked on videos for Alkaline Trio, Metro Station, Sara Bareilles and Great Northern, among others -- features aerial shots of the Chicago skyline at night interspersed with footage of Isaac Slade and the boys perched unnervingly on rooftops clad in black overcoats and linge

  • Entertainment Weekly isn't on the Fray's bandwagon

Around here, implying that the Fray is something less than the second coming of the Beatles borders on apostasy. In the world at large, however, the Denver band seldom gets special treatment -- unless said treatment is especially nasty. Take the "Coming Reactions" section of Entertainment Weekly's January 9 edition, which reviews "long movie-trailer-like ads for new and returning shows." The promo for the much-anticipated January 21 return of ABC's Lost receives a middling C grade that's jus

  • The Fray at the Gothic Theatre

The Fray Gothic Theatre Tuesday, January 7, 2009 You know you've arrived when you can front-load your set with the hits that you used to save for last, the ones that let you quit your day job. And there they were: three songs into the set, the illustrious "Over My Head (Cable Car)," followed by "How to Save a Life" half a dozen songs later. The set closer these days: the act's current single, "You Found Me," which can also be seen as a testament to the strength of the new material, which is a

  • A first look at the Fray's new documentary

Just attended a private screening at Starz FilmCenter of Fair Fight, a brand-new documentary focusing on the Fray that chronicles the making of the act's forthcoming album. The film was directed by Rod Blackhurst, a onetime merch guy who's been trailing the band for the better part of three years, essentially documenting their every breath. According to Kelly Magelky, another talented director who's been shooting the Fray himself for a number of years and who edited Fight, Blackhurst presented

  • Isaac Slade on the meaning of "You Found Me"

We started off the day talking about the Fray's new album, which hit stores today, and posted a link to its performance on Good Morning America. So it seems fitting to end the day with another clip that Ron Patrick from Douglas County Television brought to our attention of Isaac Slade giving more insight on the meaning and inspiration of "You Found Me," the first single from the record. Check out the interview after the jump.

  • The Fray tops Billboard 200

Earlier this week, the Fray captured the top spot at Twist & Shout, and we wondered if that trend would carry over nationally. Well, it looks like indeed it has, as Isaac Slade and company have toppled Springsteen, as Billboard put it, to claim the number-one slot on Billboard 200, by registering nearly 200,000 sales of its self-titled sophomore release. The exact figure is reportedly 179,000 units, which outdid the act's previous best sales week, Christmas of 2006, by 29,000 copies. A

  • Meet the Fraysayers

Dull. Boring. Formulaic. Uniformly bland. Uninteresting. Calculated. Inoffensive. Forgettable. These are just a few of the adjectives that various critics from across the country have used to describe the Fray's self-titled sophomore release. As observed in this column last week, the band is clearly resonating with its fans -- earlier this week, the outfit checked in at number one on Billboard's Top 200, besting the Boss, no less -- while taking just an absolute beating from the critics. After t

  • The Fray covers, uh ... Kanye West?

Hot on the heels of last week's Valentine's Day challenge in which the Fray reportedly wrote and recorded a love song in 24 hours at the behest of Q Magazine, comes this oddity: Evidently, Isaac Slade and company -- prompted by God only knows what -- recorded a cover of Kanye West's "Heartless" on Radio 1, which he then posted on his blog today (scroll down -- it's toward the bottom of the page). Gotta be honest, didn't see this one coming. Insta-take: far less forced and awkward than the B

  • A first look at the new Fray video

Okay, so what exactly are these Fray kids trying to tell us? What is with this pervasive, underlying sense of calamity that's informed the video representation of songs from their latest record? Do they know something we don't? In the last video for "You Found Me," for example, in which they borrowed a plot line from City of Angels (or Wings of Desire, which that film adapted), the guys posed as, well, angels in overcoats, hovering amongst other onlookers, as EMTs tended to a car crash victim. • Keeping up with the Johnsons

The Johnson family never ceases to amaze us with their extraordinary talent. From making music (Nathan Johnson, musician, Cinematic Underground) to making films (Rian Johnson, auteur, Brick and Brothers Bloom) to making records (Aaron Johnson, producer, God or Julie/ and the Fray), the Johnsons are an exceptional bunch. We were just reminded of this earlier today as we stumbled across the video for Katie Chastain's "Snowshow." Nathan directed the clip, posted above, this past June in Martha's

  • A first look at Meese's "Forward Motion" video

Rod BlackhurstYesterday, we posted a video from Katie Chastain directed by Nathan Johnson, a Denver bred artist/musician/director with loose ties to the Fray. Today, we bring you another swell clip from a director who's directly associated with Isaac Slade and company, Rod Blackhurst, the guy responsible for Fair Fight, the 80-minute documentary focusing on the Fray, and The Fray: There and Back, the coffee table photo book documenting the Denver group's rise to promience. Blackhurst, who at

  • The Fray files suit against former manager

From Bill Joel to Trent Reznor, it's a well-worn story line: a seemingly shrewd business manager attempts to hoodwink young musicians under his charge, taking advantage of their inexperience and naivety for his gain, and getting away with it before they really know any better or realize what's happening to them. Such appears to be the case with the Fray, whose principles filed suit against their former manager, Gregg Latterman, in U.S. District Court yesterday. In the suit, filed by Isaac Sla

  • The Fray and the furious

Must suck to be a rock star, eh? Getting paid to do something you'd do for free anyway, not to mention all the food, all the fans, all the chicks (unless, ahem, you're married of course) and all the other perks -- life just must be absolutely miserable. It's a wonder dudes can keep their heads-up half the time. Yeah, or not. As you'll see from the above video of the Fray's Isaac Slade and Jack Mannequin's Andrew McMahon, just posted by our pal Rod Blackhurst, who unearthing this lost footage f
